LONDON, March 15 (UPI) -- Representatives for British celebrity couple Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes say the actress and director have separated.

Winslet, 34, and Mendes, 44, married in May 2003. They have one son and have been raising Winslet's daughter from her previous marriage to film director Jim Threapleton.

"Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year," said a statement issued to the BBC Monday by the law firm Schillings. "The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement.

"Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family."

Winslet's film roles include "The Reader," for which she won an Academy Award, as well as "Titanic" and "Sense and Sensibility."

Mendes, who won an Oscar for directing "American Beauty," directed Winslet in 2008's "Revolutionary Road."
