Third 'Chipmunks' flick to be 3-D

LOS ANGELES, March 11 (UPI) -- Hollywood's 20th Century Fox says "Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D," the third flick in the "Chipmunks" film franchise, will open in 2011, Variety reported.

The films feature human actors Jason Lee and David Cross in supporting roles, while the titular chipmunk characters are animated.

The next installment in the music-themed movie series is to hit theaters Dec. 16, 2011, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said. It will be the first "Chipmunks" movie to be released in 3-D.
