LOS ANGELES, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- U.S. music video director Marc Webb has been hired to head up the next installment in the "Spider-Man" film franchise, sources confirmed to EW.com.

Webb made his feature-film debut with last year's hit "(500) Days of Summer."

The three recent "Spider-Man" blockbusters starred Tobey Maguire, 34, as Peter Parker and his super-powered alter-ego Spider-Man, and Kirsten Dunst, 27, as his love interest Mary Jane. The trilogy was directed by Sam Raimi.

However, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios said last week the next installment of their franchise is based on a script by James Vanderbilt and focuses on Parker/Spider-Man as a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. Because of the planned youth-oriented story line, the studios said a new cast and director were being brought in for the next film, which is set for release in 2012. The new stars have not yet been announced.
