LONDON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- British films are expected to surpass $1.6 billion in ticket sales this year for the first time thanks to several blockbusters, industry officials say.

The Sunday Times of London said thanks to blockbuster films like "Avatar," the ticket sales milestone is expected to be reached as of Sunday and at least one industry official sees similar success ahead in 2010.

"It's very exciting and confirms the strength of the business," said Tim Richards, chief executive for the Vue cinema chain "Next year is looking like it will be at least as strong as this."

Odeon chief executive Rupert Gavin said despite the economic downturn worldwide, British residents have flocked to hits like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" this year.

"Cinema always does well in a recession because it cheers people up. We are still one of the most affordable good nights out and are seeing more family groups coming in -- there is a bonding effect," Gavin told The Sunday Times.
