'White Ribbon' tops European Film Awards

BERLIN, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Judges for the European Film Awards said "The White Ribbon" from director Michael Haneke is the winner of the best European film of 2009 award.

The European Film Academy said in a release Saturday in addition to earning best film honors, "Ribbon" helped Haneke earned best director honors as well the award for best screenwriter of the year.

European Film Awards acting honors for 2009 went to actor Tahar Rahim for "A Prophet" and actress Kate Winslet for "The Reader."

The Carlo Di Palma European Cinematographer Award was given to Anthony Dod Mantle for his work on "Antichrist" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

Top European Composer honors went to Alberto Iglesias for "Broken Embraces," while the award for best European Discovery of 2009 went to the film "Katalin Varga" by director Peter Strickland.

British director Ken Loach received the European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and French actress Isabelle Huppert was given an award for European Achievement in World Cinema, the academy said.
