NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Nicolas Cage has been named an international goodwill ambassador for a United Nations anti-drugs and crime agency, a U.N. official said.
United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Executive Director Antonio Maria Costa used the U.N. Correspondents Association's 14th annual benefit dinner Friday night to announce the appointment of Cage, the United Nations said in a release.
"Until today, justice has been a cause without a rebel. Now we have one," Costa said.
"The 'Lord of War' has become a messenger for peace, the 'Bad Lieutenant' has turned into a good cop, and the inmate from 'Con Air' has become a champion of prison reform," added Costa, referring to three Cage movies, "Lord of War," "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" and "Con Air."
Cage, 45, said he recognizes the difficulties of his new post, but that he is determined to support UNODC efforts worldwide.
"I intend to shine the spotlight on the need for global justice, publicize all the good work that UNODC is doing, and highlight how we can all make a difference," said Cage, who helped the U.N. office open its "Welcome to Gulu" benefit exhibition this year.
