Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Fergie says she's still "great friends" with ex-husband Josh Duhamel.

The 42-year-old singer discussed her relationship with the 44-year-old actor Wednesday at her Double Dutchess screening in New York, following news she and Duhamel have separated after eight years of marriage.

"Josh and I are great friends, a lot of these emotional songs are his favorite songs on the album, they have been there for a while," Fergie said of the songs on Double Dutchess, her visual album, in an interview with Extra.

"This was the right place for these songs to come out," she added. "You got to let it out somewhere as long as it comes out with love, I feel like what are you going to do."

Fergie told Entertainment Tonight she and Duhamel remain close and focused on their son, 4-year-old Axl Jack.

"We're great friends, Josh and I. There's so much love that we have for each other," the star said. "We really like each other, we have fun with each other."

"We're just not a romantic couple anymore," she explained. "But we are still Axl's parents through and through, and our families -- each other's families, the cousins, my nieces and nephews -- it's all the same. So that's the only thing that's changed."

Fergie and Duhamel announced their split in a joint statement last week. The pair said at the time that they decided to separate "with absolute love and respect" earlier this year.

"To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family," the stars said.
