Kendall and Kylie Jenner accused of appropriating Chola culture

Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Celebrity sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner have been accused of appropriating Chola culture.

The reality stars and designers drew criticism after their Kendall + Kylie fashion line posted a since-deleted photo of a model wearing a flannel shirt buttoned only at the top, a bustier, baggy pants and large hoop earrings.

"Now they're trying to be cholas do they ever stop cultural appropriating," one person responded after The Shade Room posted a screenshot on Instagram.

"@KendallJenner @KylieJenner will you ever come up with your own ideas? #culturevultures," Twitter user @lipstickittty said.

Cholas are known for wearing baggy pants, flannels buttoned at the top, and makeup styles including dark lip liner. Ashley Sherengo, who goes by @lipstickittty, told Refinery29 she was upset by Kendall and Kylie profiting off the Mexican-American subculture.

"What bothers me is that they don't ever come up with their own original ideas," Sherengo explained. "They are always taking ideas from others and never give credit. Aside from being unoriginal, it's definitely irritating to see these girls making money off a culture they know absolutely nothing about."

"When we -- Latinas and Xicanas -- dress in flannels and big pants, we get profiled and frowned upon. But when they do it, it's 'fashion,'" she added.

The Kendall + Kylie line previously caused controversy after the stars designed several t-shirts with their faces over images of music icons including Notorious B.I.G. and Ozzy Osbourne. The stars ultimately canceled the shirts.
