March 30 (UPI) -- Michelle Kwan and husband Clay Pell are headed for divorce.

Pell, a former White House staffer and one-time candidate for Governor of Rhode Island, recently filed for divorce from the 36-year-old retired Olympic figure skater after four years of marriage, according to TMZ.

Pell, who served as a national security staffer under president Barack Obama, cited irreconcilable differences for the split. He requested Kwan pay his attorney's fees, but didn't mention spousal support.

"It is with deep regret that I share that Michelle's and my marriage is coming to an end," Pell said in a statement obtained by the Providence Journal. "This is a sad and difficult turn of events for our family."

"I love Michelle, and wish her the very best as her life takes her in a new direction. I want to thank friends and family who have given wisdom and support, and I ask for privacy during this challenging time," he added.

Kwan, who married Pell in Providence, R.I., in January 2013, has yet to address the split. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world figure skating champion celebrated brother Ron's wedding over the weekend.
