'Major League' actress Margaret Whitton dies at age 67

PALM BEACH, Fla., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Margaret Whitton, best known for playing Cleveland Indians owner Rachel Phelps in two Major League films, died Sunday at her home in Palm Beach, Fla. of cancer. She was 67 years old.

The actress and producer started out as stage performer and appeared on Broadway in 1983's Steaming and participating at the Public Theater in shows like Aunt Dan and Lemon and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

In addition to Major League and Major League II, her film credits include The Secret of My Success, 9-1/2 Weeks and Man Without A Face.

She switched from acting to directing later in her career and directed several plays and a film A Bird of the Air which was released in 2011.

She is survived by husband Warren Spector, her sisters, Suzy Liss and Mary Beth Whitton, and her brothers, James and John Whitton.
