Ryan Phillippe and fiancee Paulina Slagter split

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Ryan Phillippe and fiancée Paulina Slagter have reportedly called it quits.

Sources confirmed to E! News that the 42-year-old actor and 25-year-old law student recently ended their engagement after five years together.

Phillippe and Slagter started dating in 2011 and got engaged in December 2015. The Shooter star had nothing but praise for Slagter in a previous interview with The Howard Stern Show.

"She's awesome," he gushed to Stern in April 2015. "When people see her they have these judgments because she could be a model but she's about to graduate Stanford Law."

"As you get older, certain issues become more important to you. I'm very involved in civil rights issues, and so to be with a woman who could actually make an impact in the legal realm -- that's a beautiful thing," the actor said.

Phillippe and Slagter were last spotted together in New York in September. The star has been seen solo at several events since, including Drake's birthday party in October and his TV Guide magazine cover party Wednesday.

"[He looked to be in] good spirits," a source told Page Six. "The entire cast of Shooter stayed and watched [the World Series], turning the cover party into a celebration for the Chicago Cubs."

Phillippe was married to Reese Witherspoon from 1999 to 2007, and shares 17-year-old daughter Ava and 13-year-old son Deacon with the actress. He stars as Ben Crawford on Secrets and Lies and will play Bob Lee Swagger on Shooter.
