LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Shannen Doherty is grateful to have a friend like Chelsea Handler amid her cancer battle.

The 45-year-old actress thanked the 41-year-old television personality in an Instagram post Sunday for reaching out and lending support as she undergoes chemotherapy for breast cancer.

"And then there is this lady.... @chelseahandler We met many many years ago. Have run into each other and always exchanged numbers, talked of plans etc. Chelsea reached out and has since, made a point to have date nights with me on a weekly basis," Doherty wrote.

"Yeah she's funny but also wicked smart with a huge heart. This one just wants to make a difference. Sometimes the right people come into your life at the right time. #girlpower #fightlikeagirl," she added.

Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015 and announced in August that the disease has spread to her lymphatic system. She shared a candid photo Friday of herself after a chemotherapy session.

"Day after #chemoday isn't always so great. Sometimes one isn't able to dance, or eat or even to think about the next day. Sometimes it just feels like you aren't going to make it. That passes," the star captioned the picture.

"Sometimes the next day or 2 days later or 6 but it passes and movement is possible. Hope is possible. Possibility is possible. To my cancer family and everyone suffering.... stay courageous. Stay strong. Stay positive. #wegotthis #fightlikeagirl," she wrote.

Doherty had posted a video in early October of herself working out the day after a chemotherapy session. The actress said at the time that she believes "just moving helps so much in the healing process."
