The actress, who appeared in 2014's The Fault In Our Stars, was demonstrating peacefully with several others when she was arrested.

She also livestreamed the arrest via her Facebook page.

"Riot police are arriving at this peaceful protest where people are praying," she said at the beginning of the video, which lasted for about two hours.

"This is America," she continued. "Look what we're faced with when we're trying to protect clean water."

It wasn't immediately clear whether any of the other protesters were arrested.

The pipeline, also called the Bakken pipeline, is planned to stretch 1,100 miles and pass through North and South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.

Recently, a federal court ruled that construction on the pipeline could continue.
