LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Ariel Winter says she deferred college because of her busy production schedule.

The 18-year-old Modern Family star explained her decision to postpone college at University of California, Los Angeles while attending the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

"The problem is I had made my schedule and when I went to production, we couldn't make it work due to heavy storylines, so unfortunately I have to go next year instead of this year," Winter told E! News.

"I'm still going to be a Bruin," she qualified. "I'm super excited to go next year. It was a little late in the game, but it's all good."

Winter, who announced her deferment earlier this month, told E! host Jason Kennedy that she still plans to become a lawyer. She had previously expressed the desire in a 2015 interview with E!.

"I would love to continue acting but it's definitely important, I think, to go and do something else as well," the actress said at the time. "You never know if something's not going to work out, if one day acting is like, 'No, we don't like you anymore!'"

"You gotta have something else you can do," she explained. "I've always been interested in law so I think it'll definitely be something that I'll love to do and also go to school for."

Winter plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, which was nominated for two awards at the Emmys. The series co-stars Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara and Sarah Hyland, and will return for an eighth season Wednesday on ABC.
