TOKYO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Sony and developer Polyphony Digital have announced that the next entry in their top selling racing simulation series, Gran Turismo Sport, has been delayed until 2017.

"As we approach our planned release date in November, we realize we need more time to perfect GT Sport, which we've already dedicated so much effort towards since announcing the title," wrote creator of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, about the delay on Playstation Blog.

"We do not want to compromise the experience in any way. While we cannot confirm a new release date at this time, we are more committed than ever to making GT Sport the best Gran Turismo game to date," he continued.

Yamauchi also explained how despite the delay, Sport will continue to be shown at several gaming events around the world.

The first trailer for the title released back in May, showcased Sport's photo-realistic graphics, collection of international race tracks, in-depth photo mode and new customization options for the game's loaded library of sports cars.

As the first Gran Turismo made for the Playstation 4, Sport follows the release of 2013's Gran Turismo 6 for the Playstation 3. Sport is more of a spinoff, however, as Sony and Polyphony Digital still maintain that Gran Turismo 7 is still in development.

Sport will be compatible with Sony's upcoming virtual reality headset, Playstation VR, set for release this October.
