LONDON, July 13 (UPI) -- Former Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham is facing backlash for kissing her daughter on the lips.

The 42-year-old British designer came under heavy fire this week after posting a photo of herself kissing daughter Harper on the girl's fifth birthday.

"Happy birthday baby girl. We all love you so much X @davidbeckham @brooklynbeckham kisses from mummy X," Beckham captioned the picture.

Many deemed the display of affection "strange" and "controversial," with one social media user writing, "Eww sorry I'm old fashioned it looks like they making out." Others supported Beckham by sharing photos of themselves kissing their own kids.

"There is nothing wrong with showing your daughter love and affection in this way," one fan wrote.

Beckham's husband, David Beckham, also posted for Harper's birthday. The retired soccer star shared a picture of his daughter kissing him on the cheek and accompanied the photo with a sweet message.

"Happy birthday to my pretty lady. In 5 years baby Harper has brought so much love into our family," he wrote.

"Such a special girl in so many different ways we are so lucky to spend each day with such a beautiful soul," the star added. "We adore you baby girl happy birthday love Daddy @victoriabeckham."
