WASHINGTON, May 6 (UPI) -- Kristen Bell divulged her experience with chronic anxiety and depression, explaining she has been on medication for years.

Speaking with photographer Sam Jones during his Off Camera talk show, Bell said a seratonin imbalance runs in her family and her grandmother was one of the first women on whom shock therapy was tested.

"She would lock herself in her bedroom and drink for two day sand they would slide food under the door," the Bad Moms actress explained. "It was rough."

Bell said her mother, a nurse, helped her become aware of her mental health at a young age so she would be able to take steps on finding a balance.

"I, you know, got on a prescription when I was really young to help with my anxiety and depression, and I still take it today. And I have no shame in that, because my mom had said to me, if you start to feel this way, talk to your doctor, talk to a psychologist, see how you would like to help yourself," she explained.

Bell also mentioned what she called a "double standard" regarding mental health, explaining her mother warned her "the world wants to shame you" for taking medication. "But in the medical community, you would never deny a diabetic their insulin," she added.
