KYOTO, Japan, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- In a continuing celebration of Pokémon's 20th anniversary, Nintendo a revealed a new Pokémon that will also appear in an upcoming animated movie.
Shown to fans across social media on Valentine's Day, Magearna, a new Mythical Pokémon joins the roster of pocket monsters as the 722nd Pokémon.
"Known as the Artificial Pokémon, Magearna has a metallic body and was created by humans 500 years ago. You'll be able to see Magearna when it appears in the next Pokémon movie, expected to come out later in 2016," the company said in an official statement.
"A new Mythical #Pokemon has been discovered!," Nintendo wrote on Instagram giving fans their first look at the lightly colored Pokémon with a gear-shaped head and circular body.
Magearna will make its grand entrance in a new upcoming animated film that will see series protagonist Ash and his trusty Pikachu team up with another Mythical Pokémon to rescue Magearna from a corrupt minister. "Can Ash and Volcanion work together to rescue Magearna? One of the greatest battles in Pokémon history is about to unfold," Nintendo said of the film's premise.
The news comes after Nintendo has started its celebration of Pokémon's 20th anniversary that has included a live-action Pokémon ad aired during the Super Bowl, and a new game announced including Detective Pikachu and the rerelease of classic Pokémon games Red, Blue and Yellow for the Nintendo 3DS.
