'Destiny' to receive sequel in 2017, 'large expansion' this year

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Activision and developer Bungie have announced their upcoming plans for their successful first-person shooter, Destiny.

The company made the announcement Thursday ahead of its quarterly earnings call according to IGN.

"Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017," the publisher said.

Activision also noted that Destiny has over 25 million registered users who logged over 3 billion hours playing the game.

On the developer side, Bungie further elaborated on the announcement on their weekly blog stating that the first title in the series would also be receiving a content update in the spring ahead of the expansion.

The spring update will add onto Destiny "a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability."

Released in 2014, Destiny has continued to bring in fans with multiple expansion packs, content updates and events including the currently playable "Crimson Days" Valentine's Day event.
