BOSTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- WWE's annual December event, TLC (Tables, Ladders and Chairs) took place Sunday featuring an explosive confrontation between Roman Reigns and WWE World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus.

With the title on the line, Reigns hoped to get revenge against the Celtic Warrior who Brogue Kicked his way to the title after spoiling Reigns' championship victory at last month's Survivor Series.

The two competitors met in the company's most devastating and unforgiving match type, the TLC in where Reigns and the reigning champ drove each other through tables and blasted chairs against their bodies. Sheamus gained the upper hand however when his League of Nations partners Alberto Del Rio and Rusev interfered in the match, allowing their leader to climb a ladder to claim the suspended WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

"With help from @RusevBUL and @VivaDelRio, @WWESheamus RETAINS the @WWE World Heavyweight Championship! #WWETLC," the company wrote alongside a photo of Sheamus raising the top prize in sports-entertainment.

Angry at the loss, Reigns punished the League of Nations after their celebration and even attacked WWE COO Triple H who attempted to calm him down much to crowd's delight.

Earlier, a new Intercontinental Champion was crowned when Dean Ambrose defeated Kevin Owens after reversing the powerful pop-up powerbomb into a roll-up pin for the three count. "Take a look at your NEWWWW Intercontinental Champion! The #AmbroseAsylum is OPEN in Boston!," WWE tweeted alongside a photo of Ambrose taunting Owens with his new title.

Other notable matches included a rematch between WWE Divas champion Charlotte and her rival Paige. The Total Diva was unsuccessful against Charlotte again who took after her Hall of Fame father Ric Flair when she smashed Paige's face against an exposed turnbuckle for the win.

WWE Tag Team champions The New Day also retained their gold against The Lucha Dragons and The Usos in a triple threat ladder match that featured the most death defying stunts of the night.
