LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Kate Hudson is enjoying being single, nearly one year after her split from Matthew Bellamy.

The 36-year-old actress opened up about her personal life in an interview for the December issue of Harper's Bazaar. Hudson has been linked to 23-year-old actor Nick Jonas since the breakup, but told the magazine she's enjoying time by herself.

"It's nice to get acquainted with myself alone," she shared. "You know, the goal when you get into a relationship is not to be out of the relationship. It's to try to stay in the relationship. But if it doesn't work, you can't force those things."

Hudson and Bellamy were together over four years before ending their engagement in December 2014. The former couple share 4-year-old son Bingham, and the actress is also mother to 11-year-old son Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson.

"I really do feel very lucky," she said of her present status. "I've had my kids and my relationships. I've set my life down -- I'm in my house, and I'm alone with my children -- and I'm at peace, and that's a really nice feeling. All I really want in my life is to maintain that."

"It's hard to let go of something, even when you know that it's not right," she added of relationships. "I've chosen something in my life that I'm very comfortable with that goes against a lot of people's more traditional feelings. If something's not right, I don't believe in maintaining something for the sake of what's considered a traditional family."

Hudson often shares posts of son Ryder on social media, including a video of them dancing to Fetty Wap hit "Trap Queen" in July and enjoying a lake day in September. The actress herself is daughter to Cactus Flower star Goldie Hawn and actor and musician Bill Hudson.

Hudson last appeared in Rock the Kasbah with Bill Murray, and will next voice Mei in Kung Fu Panda 3. The actress is also slated for Mother's Day with Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts and Deepwater Horizon with Mark Wahlberg.
