CHICAGO, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Jennifer Hudson recently opened up about her family's murders to Glamour magazine.

The 34-year-old singer discussed the personal tragedy in an interview for the publication's November issue. Hudson said having her son David, Jr., helped her cope after her brother-in-law killed her mom, brother and nephew in 2008.

"It's frustrating as hell to me to have somebody who ain't lost nothing try to talk to me about it," she admitted. "I want to say, 'Don't even bother, because you know nothing.' But you never know how much you can get through until you're going through it."

"I went from being an aunt, having a mom, and being a child to not having a mom, becoming a mom, and raising my own child," she related. "I tell David all the time, 'You saved my life' ... My whole life, through the good things, the bad things, I know nothing is guaranteed."

Hudson's elder sister Julia was estranged from her husband, William Balfour, when he shot the siblings' family members to death in October 2008. Balfour received three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murders in July 2012.

"I'm not letting him off the hook for anything," Hudson told Oprah Winfrey prior to the sentencing. "[But] I feel like, for the most part, it's not his fault. It's what he was taught. How he was brought up. We tried to offer love, but he was so far gone he couldn't even see that."

Hudson and fiancé David Otunga got engaged in September 2008, and welcomed David, Jr., in August 2009. The singer came to fame on American Idol season 3, and last released JHUD in September 2014. She will star in new Spike Lee film Chiraq in 2016.
