LONDON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Singer-songwriter Sam Smith has announced his involvement in writing and singing the theme song for the latest James Bond film, Spectre.

The British artist revealed the news late Monday night via Twitter, calling the opportunity "one of the highlights of my career."

Following the footsteps of artists like Adele and Paul McCartney, Smith, 23, said he is "relieved" to finally share news of the single, called "Writing's On The Wall." He told BBC's radio 1 Tuesday the project had "been a top secret mission of my own."

"It's the quickest I've ever written a song -- it took 20 minutes...and they loved it," Smith said. "I love the song so much."

Smith co-wrote the tune with Jimmy Napes, who also helped write "Stay With Me" from his Grammy award-winning album In The Lonely Hour, which made it to No. 2 on the U.S. charts.

"Writing's On The Wall" will be the first Bond theme performed by a British male solo artist since 1965, when singer Tom Jones recorded "Thunderball."

Earlier this summer, singer Ellie Goulding dropped major hints she was working on the Bond theme song. Alongside an Instagram photo of herself leaving Abbey Road Studios -- where Adele recorded her "Skyfall" hit -- Goulding wrote "that's a wrap!" And in a tweet, quoted McCartney's Bond theme song, "Live and Let Die."

But Smith seems to have won the hearts of Spectre producers, so much so they may have even gifted him a silver Spectre ring.

"Writing's On The Wall" will be available for purchase Sept. 25 while the flick opens in U.K. theaters Oct. 26.

Spectre will hit U.S. theaters Nov. 6.
