Judge Joe Brown turns himself in, will serve 5-day jail sentence

MEMPHIS, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Judge Joe Brown, from the CBS television show of the same name, will serve a short jail sentence after turning himself in Thursday.

Brown, 68, was charged with contempt of court in Memphis, Tenn., in 2014 when he and the court judge entered a heated debate during a child custody hearing. At the time, the former reality star -- a real judge -- was working as a lawyer for a woman who asked him for his help.

He will serve a five-day sentence.

"I will not apologize for vigorously defending my client and demanding that the court follow the law," Brown said in a statement. "What I saw was a miscarriage of justice and I did what needed to be done. I will serve the time and I will continue to stand up and speak out for justice as I have done throughout my 40-year legal career. When our courts don't follow the rule of law, justice is in jeopardy for everyone."

Brown's popular TV series was canceled in 2013, and in 2014 he was arrested after angrily responding to the news the child support case he was part of was not on the docket.
