WASHINGTON, July 15 (UPI) -- Oscar winner Tilda Swinton has confirmed she will play The Ancient One in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange.

Swinton's suitability for the role has raised some questions, due to the fact that The Ancient One is a Tibetan Monk and Swinton is white. USA Today reported Tibetan heritage is key to The Ancient One's role in the Doctor Strange story, and fans were already upset about Benedict Cumberbatch taking on the role in hoping to see an actor of color as a lead.

The Independent reported the story would be modernized in order to fit in Swinton as The Ancient One. The studio released no further details on their plans to modernize both The Ancient One and the Doctor Strange story.

Besides Swinton, Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marvel has remained silent about the upcoming film. The studio has not released any other actors or the plot. Doctor Strange is expected in theaters sometime in 2016.
