AC/DC enters music streaming universe

WASHINGTON, June 30 (UPI) -- AC/DC has finally joined the music-streaming universe and is now featured on Apple Music, Spotify and Rdio.

According to reports, the longtime digital-music holdout will release its catalog on the subscription-based streaming services starting Tuesday -- which is also the opening day for Apple Music.

AC/DC has already gained over 700,000 followers on Spotify; its most recently released album Rock or Bust is available for streaming alongside Back In Black, Highway to Hell, Ballbreaker and others.

The New York Times broke the story after anonymous sources confirmed that the band, notoriously slow to the realm of downloadable music and Internet streaming, was ready to release their music. The group did not join iTunes until 2012, becoming among the last to hop onto the online sales bandwagon.

In 2008, the band decidedly passed on the opportunity to sell their Black Ice album digitally, claiming that people still liked buying whole albums as opposed to separate songs -- which iTunes allows. "These songs belong together. It's about five boys having a damn good time in a studio," singer Brian Johnson said at the time.

The band joined iTunes years after similar rock legends Metallica (2006); Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd (2007); and the Beatles (2010) did so, completing their first online release of Rock or Bust in November 2012. It reportedly sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S..
