LONDON, June 12 (UPI) -- During Sandra Bullock's first red carpet appearance in over a year, she made a point to speak out against how women are portrayed in media.

At the world premier of her film Minions -- in which she lends her voice to the villainess Scarlet Overkilll -- Bullock said being dubbed as the World's Most Beautiful Woman gives her a platform to empower women the best she can.

The 50-year-old mother of one told Extra that she was willing to accept the title for 2015 "as long as we can represent women and talk about the camaraderie that we all have that always gets attacked and downplayed."

"I'm tired of people attacking women in the media," she explained. "I said If I can talk about the great women that I know and admire then I'd love to do it."

Not only was Thursday's premiere appearance the first in quite a while for Bullock -- who wore a paisley Stella McCartney peplum dress -- but her role in Minions marks the first villainous character she's ever played. Surprisingly, the Gravity actress says the evil role fit her best, calling it "more me."

"It's nice, and it's more 'me' than anything else I played," Bullock said. "She's bitchy and crabby."

To Bullock, the Despicable Me! prequel's most important audience member might just be her 5-year-old son Louis, who will finally get to see one of her films -- even if he doesn't know.

"Louis has no idea that I'm in this film," Bullock admits to Entertainment Tonight. "He won't put two and two together -- at least not anytime soon. If he does, I'll be shocked. The kid surprises me all the time."

Minions hits theaters July 10.
