Taylor Swift kicks off her world tour in Tokyo

TOKYO, May 6 (UPI) -- The 55,000 seat cylindrical Tokyo Dome lit up in unison Tuesday night as Taylor Swift officially kicked off her 1989 world tour with a two-hour performance.

The highly anticipated concert incorporated special light bracelets for each attendee that changed color, video messages from Swift's close friends like Selena Gomez and members of Haim and 10 complete costume changes, Billboard reports.

Fans went all out, arriving in droves dressed in thoughtful, colorful costumes resembling many of Swift's characters from past music videos.

The "Blank Space" singer sang atop a stage with her team of all-male dancers and gave the crowd an inside look of what inspired 1989.

"For this album I was a 25-year-old girl, single, writing about love from the outside looking in. I learned a lot about love from...watching movies! Eighties teen movies like Sixteen Candles," she said.

She continued to explain the plot lines of such movies, which more often than not, featured an estranged duo who somehow find a reason to love each other. "And then at the end of the movie the person shows up and says what the other person wants to hear....at 2 a.m.," she said before performing "I Wish You Would."

Later in the show, Swift stepped atop a tall platform high above the crowd and spoke words of encouragement before launching into "Clean."

"Remember, you are not your mistakes. You are not damaged goods. You are not the opinion of someone who doesn't know you," she said. "You are someone who survived a rainstorm which made you stronger. Now I believe a lot of rainstorms make you clean."

The end of the show rocked the crowd as the final lineup included Taylor's most popular songs, including "Love Story," "We Are Never Getting Back Together" and "Shake It Off," which she and her dancers performed while the floor under them rotated and fans roared.
