'Doctor Zhivago' closing on Broadway after 26 previews, 23 regular performances

NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- The new musical Doctor Zhivago is to play its final performance at the Broadway Theatre on Sunday.

Based on Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning, 20th-century epic Russian masterpiece, the show is closing after 26 previews and 23 regular performances.

It stars Tam Mutu in his Broadway debut as the passionate doctor and poet Yurii Zhivago, Kelli Barrett as the alluring Lara Guishar, Tom Hewitt as the cynical bourgeois magistrate Viktor Komarovsky, Paul Alexander Nolan as political radical Pasha Antipov, and Lora Lee Gayer as Tonia Gromeko, Zhivago's devoted wife, press notes said. "We are all incredibly proud of this emotional and important work our amazing creative team has put together. There has been extraordinary dedication and inspiring work from the cast and entire Doctor Zhivago team, both onstage and off," producer Anita Waxman said in a statement Tuesday. "We look forward to this soaring and beautiful new musical having a long future with productions playing not only North America, but also around the world."
