LONDON, April 27 (UPI) -- The documentary, Amy, set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival about Amy Winehouse, has been criticized by the late singer's family.

The film directed by Asif Kapadia follows the singer who died at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning in July 2011.

Winehouse's relatives spoke up about the film and issued a statement to People saying: "It is both misleading and contains some basic untruths. The narrative is formed by the testimony of a narrow sample of Amy's associates, many of whom had nothing to do with her in the last years of her life. Counter views expressed to the filmmakers did not make the final cut."

The family is now considering taking legal action towards the filmmakers.

"We came on board with the full backing of the Winehouse family and we approached the project with total objectivity," said a spokesperson for the film.

In an interview with The Sun, Amy's father, Mitch said, "I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted."
