LOS ANGELES, March 6 (UPI) -- John Mayer doesn't consider himself a womanizer.

The 37-year-old singer opened up about his reputation in an interview with Ronan Farrow for Today. Mayer was well-known for his relationships with Jennifer Simpson, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and more, but told Farrow he was misunderstood.

"I went, 'All right, dude. You did a couple interviews where you were out of touch and you were being a ham -- and you were basically break dancing into a nitroglycerin plant," he recalled. "[I realized it wasn't who I wanted to be after] the first time someone [said], 'You're a womanizer.'"

Mayer declared he "absolutely" does not consider himself a womanizer, but admitted he has a problematic need for approval. The singer shut down his Twitter account and retreated from the public eye in order to keep himself from feeding his addiction.

"That's why I pulled myself off of it again," he said of social media. "I'm a recovered ego addict and the only way that I can be sure that I don't relapse is to admit that I constantly have this ego addiction every day. So I do the Grammys and I go home because if I stay, I get high again."

Mayer last released Paradise Valley in 2013, and told Farrow his addiction to approval interfered with his music. The singer recently announced he has projects in the works, tweeting, "Practicing guitar more than I have since my early 20s. Taking on a bunch of new music this year."
