NEW YORK, March 4 (UPI) -- Hilary Duff opened up about the longevity of relationships and how they change over time in her cover interview for the April 2015 issue of Cosmopolitan.

The actress, 27, filed for divorce from Mike Comrie in February after five years of marriage. While speaking to the glossy about the split, Duff said she's not sure "people are meant to be together forever."

"Things happen over a long relationship that you can't always fight," she said. "A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness."

Duff married Comrie at an early age because she had "been working since the age of 11 or 12, so making that choice at a young age seemed right for [her]." Though she now thinks it maybe wasn't the best idea, she says the couple spent "the majority of our time together really happy."

"It wasn't working well enough to stay together, but there was still a lot of love involved," she said.

Duff and Comrie share a 2-year-old son named Luca.
