NEW YORK, March 3 (UPI) -- Molly Ringwald says daughter Mathilda loves The Breakfast Club.

The 47-year-old actress recently watched the film with the 11-year-old, and spoke about its lasting significance Tuesday on Today. The Breakfast Club celebrated its 30th anniversary in February, and the star admitted she was surprised by the movie's staying power.

"I always loved the script and I love the movie, but I never imagined that we would be talking about it 30 years later," she confessed. "I never imagined that it would still speak to, you know, my kids. I have an 11-year-old who just saw it for the first time and I have 5-year-old twins."

"I feel like it just keeps speaking to generation after generation," she related. "I actually did a story about it for This American Life because it mattered to me. I showed [Mathilda] 16 Candles and Pretty in Pink, but I was kind of holding out on that one and I realized it had a lot of significance for me."

Ringwald portrayed Claire Standish in the 1985 high school film, with Emilio Estivez as Andy Clark, Anthony Michael Hall as Brian Ralph Johnson, Judd Nelson as John Bender and Ally Sheedy as Allison Reynolds. The movie was directed by John Hughes, and helped catapult the five actors to fame.

Ringwald went on to star in such films as Pretty in Pink and Fresh Horses, and married author Panio Gianopoulos in 2007. The couple welcomed Mathilda in 2003 and twins Adele and Roman in 2009, and the actress recently shared a photo with her elder daughter on Instagram.

Ringwald is also known for playing Anne Juergens on ABC series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and last appeared as Madame Frechette in Lifetime movie Wishin' and Hopin'. The actress will star with Aubrey Peeples in Jem and the Holograms come October.
