Berlinger and Sinofsky worked together on Brother's Keeper, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and the acclaimed Paradise Lost trilogy of films about the West Memphis Three, a trio of young men wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for nearly two decades for slaying three young boys in Arkansas. Due to the spotlight the films put on the case, the investigation was eventually reopened and the men were released in 2011.

Metallica and Damien Echols, one of the men freed because of the Paradise Lost films, paid tribute to Sinofsky on Twitter this weekend.
