Shakira, boyfriend Gerard Pique welcome baby boy

BARCELONA, Spain, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Shakira and boyfriend Gerard Piqué welcomed their second child Thursday.

The 37-year-old singer gave birth to a baby boy by scheduled C-section at Teknon hospital in Barcelona, Spain. Shakira and Piqué reportedly rented out an entire floor of the clinic, where son Milan was also born.

"We are happy to announce the birth of Sasha Piqué Mebarak," the couple announced Friday. "The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means 'defender of mankind' and 'warrior.' The hospital confirmed that both mother and child are in excellent health."

Shakira and the 27-year-old Spanish soccer player met on the set of the singer's music video for "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" in 2010. The couple welcomed son Milan in January 2013, and confirmed they were expecting their second child in August 2014.

Shakira released her 10th studio album, Shakira, in March 2014. The record debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and includes the singles "Empire" and "Dare (La La La)." She currently has a new, Spanish-language album in the works.
