SEATTLE, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Dave Matthews raised the 12th Man flag Thursday in Seattle.

The 48-year-old musician erected the emblem atop the Space Needle for the Seattle Seahawks. The flag represents and honors NFL fans, who serve as a "12th Man" to the 11 players per team on the field.

"It was a huge honor," Matthews told KIRO TV. "It's so exciting to be in this city with the energy that everyone feels and the support that everyone feels, and the way it sort of brings a civil pride into the city ... It's a really cool thing to be a part of and feel like you belong to something."

Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has lived in Seattle for the past 15 years. The musician last released Away from the World with Dave Matthews Band in September 2012, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
