NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- All performances on New York's snow-socked Great White Way have been canceled for Monday, The Broadway League announced.

The decision to cancel shows came after travel restrictions were put in place by government authorities in anticipation of the severe weather. Snow started falling early Monday, but conditions are expected to worsen Monday night into Tuesday morning.

"Now that the storm has arrived, I'd like to reiterate that the safety and security of theatergoers and employees is everyone's primary concern," Charlotte St. Martin, the league's executive director, said in a statement. "As a result of the 11 p.m. travel ban and other travel restrictions and safety precautions implemented by government authorities on behalf of the winter storm, evening performances will be canceled tonight. We will send out an official notice with information about tomorrow's performances as soon as possible, or no later than 6 p.m. today."

While most theaters are dark Monday nights, shows that had scheduled performances include Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera and Mamma Mia!
