By Matt Bradwell

CHICAGO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Video game publisher NetherRealm has released a new trailer for the hotly-anticipated tenth installment of the Mortal Kombat series.

The new trailer focuses on classic Kombat characters Kitana and Kung Lao, with old favorites Scorpion, Raiden and, of course, face-of-franchise Sub-Zero also appearing to impale throats, cut off heads and disembowel torsos in the two-minute preview.

"Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top-visceral fighting," NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon said when the game was announced in June. Boon, who created the fighting franchise with John Tobias, is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tenured voice actor in video games.

"With Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet. The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all-new graphics engine."

Also making a cameo in the trailer is a resurrected four-armed Goro, available exclusively to players who preorder Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X will be released on April 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on April 14.
