LOS ANGELES, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- From Miley Cyrus' tongue and twerking to the debut season of True Detective, there was plenty to talk about in music, film and television in 2014. Love them or hate them, the Kardashians and Jenners dominated the year's headlines. Kim Kardashian made way for half-sister Kendall Jenner, and matriarch Kris Jenner found herself the center of attention after she filed for divorce from husband and former Olympian Bruce Jenner.

Kim Kardashian married Kanye West in a lavish ceremony at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy in May. She and the 37-year-old rapper appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine prior to the wedding, a recognition that raised eyebrows in the fashion world.
The 33-year-old reality star made the news again over a magazine cover when she bared her behind for Paper in November.
Kendall Jenner's fame climbed this year. The 19-year-old burgeoning model walked at New York, London, Paris and Milan Fashion Week for brands such as Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. She landed campaigns with Estée Lauder and designer Karl Lagerfeld. Mother Kris Jenner stepped into the spotlight when she filed for divorce from Bruce Jenner in September after 23 years of marriage. At 59, she is currently involved with Corey Gamble, while Bruce Jenner was subsequently linked to Jenner's best friend, Ronda Kamihira.
Miley Cyrus twerked her way to more attention. The 22-year-old singer's wild antics had people talking, and not everyone approved of her actions. The former Disney star responded to the tongue wagging by sticking out her own, and declared herself "a walking joke" in October.
Cyrus kicked off her Bangerz tour in February, and quickly gained notoriety for her outrageous costumes and onstage performances. The venture proved so popular NBC aired a Bangerz documentary in July, and the tour grossed more than $24 million over the span of 79 shows.
Canadian singer Justin Bieber caused even more controversy than Cyrus. The 20-year-old was in constant trouble with the law, and angered several neighbors with his penchant for partying. He also caused a fuss with his on-again, off-again relationship with Selena Gomez.
Bieber started off the year by being arrested for a DUI in Miami Beach, and was arrested again a week later for allegedly assaulting a limo driver. He was later charged with dangerous driving and assault after his ATV collided with a minivan and he got into an altercation with the driver.
Bieber's bad behavior caused celebrities such as Seth Rogen to slam the star as "a piece of [expletive]." His conduct caused problems for sometimes girlfriend Selena Gomez, but the 22-year-old actress admitted she still has some love for the singer.
While Cyrus and Bieber made plenty of headlines, music was dominated by power couple Beyoncé and Jay Z in 2014. The 33-year-old singer and 45-year-old rapper made the news for their high-profile On the Run joint tour, and were the subject of divorce rumors for the larger part of the year.
The tour was a huge commercial success, and ticket sales generated more than $100 million. The couple ended the tour in Paris.
Beyoncé tearfully accepted an award from her husband and child at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards in August, helping to quell divorce reports. Rumors of a split had reached a frenzy after the singer's younger sister, Solange Knowles, was seen attacking Jay Z in an elevator in May.
Superhero movies continued to capture the imagination in 2014. Marvel Studios raked in billions of dollars with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy, and revealed a timeline for new films through 2019.
DC Comics and Warner Bros. announced the official title of new Batman movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for 2016. Ben Affleck will portray Batman, with Henry Cavill as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
2014 marked the debut season of television shows such as HBO drama True Detective and FX series Fargo. The year also saw the end of programs like CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which divided audiences with its final episode.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson riveted viewers as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart on True Detective. The show is nominated for Best Miniseries at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, and Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams are confirmed for Season 2.
Fargo proved another standout program, with Billy Bob Thornton as Lorne Malvo, Martin Freeman as Lester Nygaard and Allison Tolman as Molly Solverson. The comedy-drama is based on the 1996 film of the same name, and Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons will lead the second season.
How I Met Your Mother came to a close after nine seasons on CBS. The series finale revealed the sitcom's titular mother (Cristin Milioti) is dead, and saw Ted (Josh Radnor) ask his children's permission to see Robin (Cobie Smulders). The ending divided both critics and audiences.
The entertainment news outlook for 2015 includes new albums from Rihanna and Iggy Azalea, R8 and The Great Escape, respectively, while Fifty Shades of Grey and Avengers: Age of Ultron will open in theaters. In addition, television series such as AMC drama Mad Men and NBC comedy Parks and Recreation will return for a final season.
