LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Ryan Gosling did not turn down People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive.

The publication crowned Thor star Chris Hemsworth on Tuesday, prompting The Wrap to report Gosling refused the honor Wednesday. A source told the website the 34-year-old actor was deemed "too serious" and "too artsy" for the title, but People has refuted the rumor as untrue.

"While I look forward to the day when Ryan Gosling is named Sexiest Man Alive, this was not his year," editorial director Jess Cagle said in a statement. "Our 2014 honoree Chris Hemsworth was our first and only choice. If you want to know why, just look at him. I mean, seriously."

Many readers were outraged when Bradley Cooper was chosen over Gosling for the honor in 2011. The pair had just finished filming The Place Beyond the Pines, and Cooper acknowledged the backlash and Gosling's good looks on The Graham Norton Show.

Gosling is known for such roles as Noah Calhoun in The Notebook (2006), and The Driver in Drive (2011). He most recently appeared alongside Christina Hendricks in his directorial debut, Lost River, and is scheduled for The Nice Guys in 2016.
