LONDON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Demi Lovato exercises six times a week, but not for the reasons you might think.

The 22-year-old singer recently told Britain's Women's Health magazine via Cover Media that working out "really helps with her mood." While speaking about her work out habits, Lovato, who is currently in the midst of a world tour, said that her work out routine is intense, but makes her feel "great."

"I'm on tour now, so I have had to change my routine; performing and traveling means I have to fit in a workout whenever I can find the time - late night cardio sessions are not unheard of," she said.

"I exercise six days a week with a rest day. It's a lot, but it really helps my mood - I feel great when I work out," she explained. "My regime includes cardio five times week: spinning and interval training, alternating sprints and walking."

The singer, who famously struggled with an eating disorder in her late teens, says she likes to keep active even during her off days.

"I don't rest on my laurels," she said. "I really look forward to active recovery, like yoga or just walking. It really keeps me focused on where I want to be with my body."

In addition to helping her control her body and her mood, Lovato says that she needs to train her body for her "energetic" live shows.

"I try to train my body for the dancing and physical element of my performance - it's a lot tougher than it looks!"

Lovato complements her exercise routine with a healthy diet that's packed with lean protein. She told the publication that salmon and turkey are staples in her menu.
