NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- A block in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City was renamed Wednesday in honor of late comedian George Carlin.

George Carlin Way was unveiled at a ceremony centered near where the raunchy comedian grew up on West 121st Street between Broadway and Amsterdam.

"That neighborhood meant so much to him that he continued to be friends with all the people he grew up with, and hung on corners with and got into trouble with," Carlin's daughter, Kelly Carlin, told 1010 WINS. "[He] spoke a lot and often and very fondly about that neighborhood."

New York City officials like city councilman Mark D. Levine and comedians including Colin Quinn, Robert Klein, Judah Friedlander and Gilbert Gottfried were on hand for the event.

Representing Carlin's family at the ceremony was his daughter and older brother Patrick Carlin, 83, who smoked marijuana while sitting under a nearby tree.

"This is how you honor George Carlin," Patrick Carlin told The New York Times.

Carlin died in 2008 of heart disease.
