LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts and her boyfriend were each charged with one count of lewd conduct after witnesses saw them reportedly having sex in their car in public last month.
If convicted, Watts and her boyfriend Brian Lucas could face a maximum of six months in jail and will have to pay a $1,000 fine.
The 28-year-old actress and Lucas were arrested in Studio City, Calif., in September after witnesses alerted officials that they were engaging in indecent exposure. At the time, Watts claimed she was detained because of her race and that officials likely thought she was a prostitute.
In an audio tape of the incident obtained by TMZ, Watts can be heard crying as she argues with the police officers and accuses them of racism. Lucas later wrote in a Facebook post that cops thought the two were engaged in prostitution because they're a bi-racial couple.
LAPD Sgt. Jim Parker, the first officer to make contact with Watts, told the NYDN the situation would not have escalated to the point it did if Watts hadn't refused to show her identification when officials first arrived at the scene.
