Celebrities react to Oscar de la Renta's death

The Dominican fashion designer began his career in fashion in the 1950s.

KENT, Conn., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Dominican fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died at his home in Kent, Conn., on Monday.

His wife, Annette de la Renta, confirmed the news to the New York Times of the day of his death and said the designer's cause of death remains unknown.

De la Renta began his career in fashion during the 1950s in Spain and worked with Cristóbal Balenciaga and at Lanvin in Paris become becoming a powerhouse in the fashion industry. Many of the women who wore his designs, including a couple of former first ladies, have taken to social media to mourn the beloved creator.

"His singular talent and exquisite taste elevated American fashion, and his warmth and friendship will be missed by our family and all whose lives he touched in his extraordinary journey," Bill and Hillary Clinton said in a joint statement.

"We will miss Oscar's generous and warm personality, his charm, and his wonderful talents," former first lady Laura Bush said in a statement. "My daughters and I have many fond memories of visits with Oscar, who designed our favorite clothes, including Jenna's wedding dress. We will always remember him as the man who made women look and feel beautiful."
