LOS ANGELES, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- More than ten years after Britney Spears locked lips with Madonna in one of the most controversial MTV Video Music Awards performances of all time, the singer's manager Larry Rudolph has opened up about the story behind the kiss.

During an interview with Billboard Rudolph reminisced about the 2003 VMAs in which Madonna collaborated with then-rising stars Spears and Christina Aguilera, and the kiss that, according to him, made the world explode.

"Madonna had been very, very, very rigid about the rehearsals. She was telling Britney and [me] every day, 'Be here tomorrow at 10 o'clock,'" he shared. "She would never address me by name; she would just say, 'You make sure Britney's here tomorrow at 10 o'clock.'"

Rudolph said he complied with the Material Girl and was rewarded for his efforts with a kiss on the lips after the performance.

"[She] wrapped her arms around my waist and gave me a big kiss on the lips," he remembers. "And she said, 'You see, Larry, it was all worth it.'"

Spears and Madonna nearly recreated their famous smooch in the official video for their joint single "Me Against The Music" one year later.
