LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Selena Gomez says Taylor Swift encourages her to strive for self-improvement.

The 22-year-old actress shared her best friend's advice in an interview Friday on The Talk. Gomez has been friends with Swift for seven years, and said the 24-year-old singer is a great source of support and nonjudgmental advice.

"She was actually at my house the other day," Gomez related. "She just kind of looked at me and was like, 'Selena, if you're the smartest person in the room, I think you're going to be in the wrong room.'"

"She thinks I should constantly surround myself with people who are going to make me better -- that are going to challenge and motivate me," she continued. "It kind of stuck to me. I want to surround myself with those people."

Gomez expressed her dedication to improving her acting skills earlier this month. Her latest film, Rudderless, sees her portray a character much different from her previous roles, and the actress told Us Weekly she was grateful for the challenge.

"I would rather be in a smaller part and learn from people like [co-stars William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman and Billy Crudup]," she asserted. "I'm extremely lucky. I love to push myself. I can't say I got this [role] because of who I am. I got this in spite of who I am."
