Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn get pink highlights for breast cancer awareness

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Kate Hudson and her mother Goldie Hawn showed support for breast cancer awareness month Friday by dyeing pink streaks in their blond manes.

The Wish I Was Here actress took to Instagram to upload a photo of the two women going pink at the saloon and revealed her reasons for joining the fight against breast cancer in the caption.

"In honor of my bestie Juliana, my assistant Kathy, my grandmother Laura, Mimo and all the people who are fighting and have fought breast cancer. Your courage shines and inspires. We decided to show our support by wearing pink proud! Thank you @majormoonn for taking us there", she wrote in the caption.

October is known as breast cancer awareness month and advocates of the cause tend to dress in pink to show support. According to the National Cancer Institute, around 232,670 women and 2,360 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and 40,000 women and 430 men died of the disease.

Hudson will next star in the Barry Levinson-directed comedy Rock the Kasbah.
