Fashion legend Oscar de la Renta dead at 82

The designer dressed four First Ladies and celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Adams and Penélope Cruz.

KENT, Conn., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Oscar de la Renta has died at age 82.

The famed fashion designer died at his home in Kent, Conn. on Monday, wife Annette de la Renta confirmed to the New York Times. De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, but the cause of death is currently unknown.

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, and started his career in fashion in 1950s Spain. The designer served an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, and later worked as a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris. He went on to launch his own label in New York in 1965, and served as head designer at Balmain from 1993 to 2002.

De la Renta dressed First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, and celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Adams and Penélope Cruz. He also designed the French lace gown Amal Alamuddin wore to wed George Clooney in September.

De la Renta is survived by wife Annette, son Moises, three stepchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
