LONDON, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Anne Hathaway says she had a hard time dealing with fame.

The 31-year-old star detailed her struggle with celebrity in the November issue of Elle UK. Hathaway today is an A-list, Academy Award-winning actress, but her rise to the top was reportedly a difficult road.

"This fame thing? [Expletive]ed me up for a really long time," she confessed. "I didn't know to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'I don't know who that is yet!'"

Hathaway got her start as Meghan Green on Fox series Get Real, and landed her first major film role in The Princess Diaries in 2001. She has since starred in films such as Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and The Dark Knight Rises, and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Fantine in Les Misérables. The actress said she has learned over the years to not let her critics faze her.

"I've realized that I don't need validation from anybody. At all," she asserted. "I'm not sitting here now worrying, 'What do you think of me?' With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don't need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that's so liberating. It's a big reveal."

Hathaway will next appear in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, and is also scheduled for Nancy Meyer film The Intern in 2015.
