NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Leonardo DiCaprio joined Instagram on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old actor posted his first photos from the U.N. Climate Summit 2014 in New York. DiCaprio was named a U.N. Messenger of Peace last week, and spoke on climate change at the opening ceremony. The star called the event the "perfect setting" to join Instagram, and shared a picture of himself with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

"Today, I have the privilege to speak at the United Nations #Climate2014 Summit where world leaders are expected to announce the bold steps they will take to tackle climate change," the actor captioned the snapshot. "Thank you Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon."

"New research shows that by 2050 clean, renewable energy could supply #100percent of the world's energy needs using EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES, and it would create millions of jobs in the US alone," he wrote. "#Climate2014 #MomentForAction."

DiCaprio established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, and works closely with the organization to protect wildlife, conserve oceans and forests and bring attention to climate change. The actor has pledged over $10 million to marine conservation this year, and was honored for his environmental activism at the Clinton Global Initiative gala on Saturday.
